1 novembre 2008 - Oslo

SATURDAY
I began the morning by going to the Historical Museum, located at the original campus of the University of Oslo, which in 1811 became Norway's first university. (It is argued that the establishment of the university helped kindle Norwegian nationalism that led to Norway's 1814 independency from the Dano-Norwegian union). At the museum there was good variety of exhibits and I was very impressed with the displays.
Note the gloves have two thumb holes... this way if one thumb hole wore out there was a quick solution.
Chinese masks
In the Viking Age exhibit there were life-like models, like the one above that is holding fir skin.
Akershus Fortress, built in the fourteenth century
The fortress successfully withstood Swedish invasions over the years.

The Norwegian Resistance Museum, which is located on the grounds of the Akershus Fortress.

A tribute to three men who were in the Norwegian resistance that after being put on trial were executed in August of 1941 outside the museum.

Statue of Johan Sverdrup... I remember learning about him in a Scandinavian history class I took. Sverdrup was the leader of the social liberal party, Venstre, and he became the first prime minister of Norway after the introduction of parliamentarism.
